Two U.S. Senate races remained uncalled Thursday afternoon, leaving the final size of Democrats’ incoming majority unsettled even though the party had already secured control of the chamber.

In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom led Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by 1,724 votes with an estimated 96% of ballots counted, according to ABC News results updated at 2:52 p.m. Eastern. Colom had 466,226 votes, or 49.0%, while Hyde-Smith had 464,502 votes, or 48.9%.

The Associated Press reported that several thousand provisional ballots still had to be reviewed and that Mississippi officials had until November 10 to resolve them. Mississippi does not provide an automatic recount, but a candidate may ask a court to order one.

In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola led Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan by 637 votes with an estimated 74% of the vote counted. ABC reported Peltola at 102,962 votes, or 48.2%, and Sullivan at 102,325 votes, or 47.9%.

That contest may take longer to resolve. Alaska accepts eligible mailed ballots until November 18, and the state uses ranked-choice voting. If no candidate finishes with more than 50% of first-choice votes, the lowest-performing candidates are eliminated and their voters’ later choices are redistributed until one candidate has a majority.

The uncalled races will not determine control of the Senate. ABC’s national results showed Democrats already projected to hold at least 54 seats in the chamber that convenes in January. The outcomes could still affect the size of the majority and the party’s ability to manage absences, nominations and close votes.

Neither narrow lead is a final result. Vote totals may change as officials process outstanding ballots, and neither the AP nor ABC had projected a winner in either contest as of Thursday afternoon.
