The American National Standards Institute and its Committee on Education announced October 30 that the 2027 Student Paper Competition is open to high school and college students nationwide.

Entries are due June 11, 2027. The competition asks students to examine how standards help establish confidence in products, services and emerging technologies. Winning papers are scheduled to be announced in August 2027.

The theme, “Would You Trust It?”, invites entrants to investigate systems people rely on even when they cannot personally inspect or test them. Suggested subjects range from helmet testing and micromobility batteries to online payments, food delivery, artificial intelligence and biometric identification.

ANSI groups the proposed research areas into products, services and emerging technology. Students with a different topic can request approval from the competition contact listed in its announcement.

The top high school paper carries a $1,000 prize, while the top entry from a student in higher education carries a $1,500 prize. ANSI said qualifying submissions receive a $20 gift card and submission certificate, and it reserves the right to withhold prizes based on the judges’ decision.

The announcement requires original, previously unpublished work and explicitly excludes AI-generated submissions. Entrants must follow the full competition flyer, which provides the detailed criteria and submission instructions.

Winning papers will be published on ANSI’s website and shared with the standards community. The institute said they may also appear in other media outlets.

Now in its sixteenth year, the competition is an education and outreach initiative. The October 30 announcement opens a forthcoming submission cycle; it does not announce winners or establish that any proposed technology meets a particular safety standard.
