# Azenta Acquires SynPlexity and Licenses Elegen DNA Technology

The company says the two transactions will expand its GENEWIZ gene-synthesis services.

Azenta announced October 30 that it acquired SynPlexity and entered an exclusive licensing agreement with Elegen to expand the DNA-synthesis capabilities of its GENEWIZ business.

The Elegen agreement covers a cell-free DNA manufacturing platform. According to Azenta, the technology provides sequence-verified DNA constructs and templates for research workflows, including antibody discovery.

The company said the platform’s compact production processes could allow it to add capacity nearer customers. That is an intended expansion capability, rather than a list of newly opened facilities.

The SynPlexity acquisition adds technology for pooled gene assembly. Azenta says it can provide thousands of full-length gene variants in a library, allowing researchers to build and test large sets of biological designs.

The announcement concerns research tools and commercial capabilities. It does not establish that any resulting treatment has been approved or that the combined technologies have demonstrated clinical benefits.

Azenta did not disclose transaction prices in the announcement. It said additional details would be provided during its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call.

The company identified technology transfer, validation, integration and scaling among the risks affecting its expected benefits.
