The Bank of England raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 4% Thursday, its first increase since August 2023, as policymakers responded to rising energy costs and a stronger inflation outlook.

The Monetary Policy Committee voted 8–1 for the increase from 3.75%. Catherine Mann opposed the quarter-point move because she preferred a larger half-point increase to 4.25%.

The central bank said the conflict in the Middle East had entered its ninth month and global energy prices had continued to rise from already elevated levels. British consumer-price inflation reached 3.5% in September, and the Bank now expects it to climb to about 5% by the middle of 2027 before easing as energy effects fade and restrictive monetary policy weighs on price growth.

Policymakers said there was still limited evidence that higher energy costs had spread broadly into wages and other prices. Even so, the inflation pressure already in the pipeline, combined with recent economic activity that was stronger than expected, was enough to justify tighter policy.

The decision affects borrowing costs across the British economy, including mortgages and business loans, while also influencing savings rates and the value of the pound. The Bank emphasized that policy is not on a preset path and that future decisions will depend on energy prices, wage growth, business pricing and the amount of spare capacity in the economy.

The official minutes show that most members viewed a quarter-point increase as sufficient insurance for now. Several said further tightening could be warranted if energy prices remain high or inflation begins to spread more persistently. Mann argued for a larger immediate move because projected inflation and the risk of changing wage and price behavior required a more forceful response.

The next scheduled Bank of England policy decision is December 17.
