Brain Canada, Weizmann Canada and Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science announced five newly funded research teams October 29, extending a collaboration that began with a 2023 cohort.

The selected projects pair investigators at Canadian universities with researchers at Weizmann. Their work spans basic brain biology and approaches that could eventually inform treatment development.

One team will examine serotonin-related circuits involved in responses to threats. Another will develop tools that make selected nerve cells sensitive to light, investigating a potential non-opioid approach to chronic pain.

A Huntington disease project will study small molecules targeting SPT5 and their effects on genetic instability. A separate collaboration will combine artificial intelligence, structural biology and fruit-fly genetics to investigate rare disorders associated with the IRF2BPL gene.

The fifth team will examine how internal conditions, including hunger and thirst, influence social behavior through oxytocin and vasopressin neurons.

The announcement identifies research awards, rather than completed clinical findings or newly available treatments. It does not specify the total funding awarded to the five teams.
