Sidney Crosby moved ahead of Marcel Dionne into sixth place on the NHL’s career scoring list as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Los Angeles Kings 5–2 on Saturday, November 7.

Crosby’s first goal gave him 1,772 career points, breaking his tie with Dionne. It came in the second period when Evgeni Malkin’s one-time shot struck Crosby’s jersey on its way into the net. Crosby added an empty-net goal late in the third period.

The milestone came in Los Angeles, where Dionne spent much of his Hall of Fame career and where his retired number hangs in the arena. Crosby had tied Dionne’s 1,771 points against Montreal on October 31.

Pittsburgh’s victory ended a four-game losing streak. Tommy Novak scored twice in the opening six minutes, and Egor Chinakhov added a power-play goal before the first intermission. Sergei Murashov stopped 26 shots for his first win of the season.

Los Angeles answered through Corey Perry and Alex Laferriere. An apparent tying goal by Artemi Panarin was overturned after an offside challenge before Crosby’s milestone goal extended Pittsburgh’s lead to 4–2.

The Penguins had moved Malkin alongside Crosby and Rickard Rakell. Malkin finished with three assists, while Novak worked on a line with Ben Kindel and Chinakhov.

Ron Francis, with 1,798 career points, is next above Crosby on the all-time list. Pittsburgh continues its California trip at Anaheim on Sunday; the Kings next host Nashville on Tuesday.
