Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a three-time Mexican presidential candidate and former Mexico City mayor, died October 28 at 92, President Claudia Sheinbaum said.

The Associated Press and Mexican outlet La Política Online independently reported the death and Sheinbaum’s confirmation. The reports did not establish a cause of death.

Cárdenas was a central figure in Mexico’s modern left. He helped found the Democratic Revolution Party, known by its Spanish initials PRD, in 1989 after breaking with the long-dominant Institutional Revolutionary Party.

He sought the presidency in 1988, 1994 and 2000. In 1997, he became Mexico City’s first popularly elected mayor, an important milestone in the capital’s political history.

A civil engineer by training, Cárdenas earlier served as a senator and governor of Michoacán. He was the son of former President Lázaro Cárdenas, whose administration nationalized Mexico’s oil industry in 1938.

Sheinbaum and former presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Vicente Fox were among those who paid tribute. Their remembrances reflected the breadth of his influence across generations of Mexican politics.
