At least seven people were killed and more than 100 injured when two passenger trains collided south of Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday, November 8, according to updated official accounts.

Egypt’s health ministry reported 112 injuries. The higher casualty count replaces earlier reports of four deaths and 88 injuries.

The state railway authority said a train traveling from Giza to Fayoum struck the rear of another service heading from Cairo to Aswan in the Al-Ayyat area of Giza province. Several carriages derailed.

Emergency teams and cranes were sent to clear the wreckage and restore railway services. The authority did not provide a timetable for reopening the affected Cairo–Upper Egypt line.

The chief prosecutor’s office said it was investigating. The inquiry is intended to establish the technical circumstances; the collision does not by itself establish individual responsibility or a confirmed cause.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi directed state agencies to provide necessary medical treatment and accelerate the investigation. In a Sunday statement, he offered condolences to the families of those killed and said anyone found negligent should be held accountable.

The casualty figures describe the authorities’ updated account as checked Sunday. Rescue operations and the inquiry remain separate from conclusions about why the two trains collided.
