Retail sales volumes in the euro area fell 0.7% in September from August, reversing the previous month’s increase, Eurostat reported Friday, November 6.

The European Union’s statistical office estimated a 0.6% monthly decline across the wider EU. Both areas had recorded 0.4% growth in August after revisions.

The euro-area decline was concentrated in non-food products excluding motor fuel, where sales volumes fell 1.2%. Food, drinks and tobacco decreased 0.3%, while automotive fuel sold through specialised stores increased 1%.

Germany recorded the largest monthly decline among countries with available figures, at 2%. Romania fell 1.3% and Portugal 0.9%. Luxembourg, Slovakia and Malta recorded the strongest increases.

Sales nevertheless remained above their year-earlier levels. Euro-area retail volumes were 0.4% higher than in September 2025, while the EU recorded a 0.9% annual increase.

Eurostat’s volume measure adjusts retail turnover for price changes. The monthly figures also account for seasonal and calendar effects, so the report measures changes in goods sold rather than simply higher or lower cash receipts.

The release revises August’s monthly growth from 0.1% to 0.4% in both areas. These are first estimates for September and remain subject to revision. The next release is scheduled for December 4.
