France moved the Nov. 9–10 meeting of Group of Seven foreign ministers from Marseille to Paris, changing the venue only days before delegations were due to gather.

An updated accreditation notice published Thursday by Italy’s Foreign Ministry said all sessions would be held at the French Foreign Ministry’s headquarters on the Quai d’Orsay. France had previously scheduled the meeting at Marseille’s Palais du Pharo.

France’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the move and cited logistical and operational demands created by holding the G7 meeting and the Paris Peace Forum within a compressed period, Reuters reported. The explanation referred to staffing, equipment, security, accommodations and transportation for delegations.

The meeting is part of France’s 2026 G7 presidency. The group includes the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain, with the European Union also participating. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is among the ministers expected to attend.

Reuters reported that France informed delegations Wednesday. Some countries already had personnel in Marseille, while other delegates and journalists were preparing to travel there.

The venue change also comes during a period of nationwide demonstrations in France. Reuters reported that security forces have been stretched by six weeks of student-led protests that broadened into a larger movement. Marseille saw looting and clashes during protests on Oct. 17, and further demonstrations were scheduled Thursday.

French officials did not identify the protests as the stated reason for the switch, instead attributing it to operational and logistical pressures. The updated notice did not announce changes to the meeting dates.

The gathering will be the second formal meeting of G7 foreign ministers during France’s presidency this year. The ministers are expected to review work by the group’s specialist bodies and discuss major international crises. A detailed public agenda had not been released with the venue update.
