# German Industrial Output Rises 0.7% as Car Production Rebounds

September’s monthly gain contrasted with a quarterly decline, while August’s previously reported increase was revised down.

German industrial production rose 0.7% in September from the previous month, according to provisional figures released Friday, November 6, by the Federal Statistical Office.

The price-adjusted increase, calculated after seasonal and calendar adjustments, was stronger than the unchanged output economists had expected in a survey. Production was 0.4% higher than a year earlier after calendar adjustment.

The monthly improvement did not translate into growth across the quarter. Output in July through September was 0.4% below the preceding three months, a comparison that smooths some monthly volatility.

August’s increase was revised to 1.0% from an initial 2.0%. Destatis attributed that unusually large revision to additional construction-industry information submitted through advance turnover-tax returns.

Car production rose 17.1% in September after two weaker months partly affected by factory holidays and production changeovers. Pharmaceuticals increased 8.0%.

Other sectors moved in the opposite direction. Construction output fell 2.6%, and machinery and equipment production dropped 6.5%. Excluding energy and construction, industrial production increased 1.7%.

The figures describe September activity, rather than output produced on Friday’s release date. They also distinguish a rebound in particular industries from a sustained recovery across German manufacturing.

Commerzbank chief economist Joerg Kraemer characterized production as continuing to move sideways at a low level, underscoring the limits of interpreting one stronger monthly reading.
