The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the Met Gala will focus on how designers transform ordinary clothing and everyday materials.

Titled “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” the exhibition will open May 9, 2027, at The Met Fifth Avenue and run through January 9, 2028. The Met Gala, which raises money for the Costume Institute, is scheduled for May 3.

The exhibition will bring together works from the institute’s collection with loans and new acquisitions. It will examine how craft, construction, material experimentation and conceptual ideas can reshape familiar items without erasing their original functions and associations.

Examples outlined by the museum include jeans, T-shirts, white shirts, puffer coats and trench coats, along with designs made from paper, plastic, metal and other commonplace materials. The exhibition will also consider how clothing develops personal meaning through wearing, styling and care.

Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, organized the exhibition after the museum and designer John Galliano canceled a previously planned retrospective in August. That decision followed criticism of Galliano’s past antisemitic and racist remarks. The replacement theme is intended to stand as a separate exhibition rather than a modified version of the canceled show.

The gala’s dress code and celebrity co-chairs have not yet been announced. Those details are typically released closer to the event.

The Met said the show will invite visitors to reconsider objects and garments that may appear unremarkable at first glance. Its central question is how design can reveal value, memory and imagination in things used every day.

The exhibition will be included with museum admission. The Costume Institute’s annual benefit is one of the department’s major fundraising events and supports exhibitions, publications, acquisitions and other operations.
