Update — November 8, 2026, 6:01 a.m. Central:

The National Weather Service revised the start of Sunday’s Northern California high-surf advisory to 7 a.m. PST in bulletins issued at 3:24 a.m. PST November 8. The advisory now runs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST, replacing the 4 a.m. start in the earlier reporting retained below.

The breaking-wave forecast remains 22–24 feet for coastal Del Norte, southwestern Humboldt and coastal Mendocino counties, with the same high-surf timing in northern coastal Humboldt. The agency warns of dangerous surf, localized beach erosion and waves reaching normally dry beach areas, roads or parking lots.

A separate coastal-flood advisory for northern coastal Humboldt continues from 10 a.m. to noon PST, with high tide at the Humboldt Bay North Spit gauge at 10:21 a.m. The bulletin forecasts up to half a foot of saltwater inundation above ground level near shorelines and tidal waterways. The separate marine hazardous-seas warning periods below are unchanged by this coastal advisory update.

Earlier Reporting:

Update — November 8, 2026, 5:08 a.m. Central:

The National Weather Service extended hazardous-seas warnings through 9 p.m. PST Sunday for waters along the Northern California coast. The Eureka office issued the revised marine bulletins at 2:55 a.m. PST November 8.

From Point St. George to Cape Mendocino, the warning runs from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. PST. It forecasts very steep seas of 12–17 feet within 10 nautical miles of shore and 13–18 feet in waters 10–60 nautical miles offshore.

Farther south, from Cape Mendocino to Point Arena in waters 10–60 nautical miles offshore, the warning runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. PST, with very steep seas of 13–17 feet forecast. Small-craft advisories cover the preceding hours in those marine zones.

These marine sea heights describe different areas and measurements from the 22–24-foot breaking-wave forecast in the earlier coastal high-surf advisory below. They should not be read as a revision replacing that beach forecast.

The weather service warns that very steep seas could capsize or damage vessels. It urges recreational boaters to remain in port and commercial vessels to prepare for rough seas and consider staying in port until conditions subside. No harbor closure is established by these warning bulletins.

Earlier High-Surf Reporting:

The National Weather Service issued a new high-surf advisory Friday afternoon for parts of Northern California, forecasting breaking waves of 22 to 24 feet along the coast Sunday.

The advisory covers coastal Del Norte County, northern coastal and southwestern Humboldt County, and coastal Mendocino County. Its stated period runs from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time Sunday, November 8.

The Eureka office issued the advisory at 2:30 p.m. PST November 6. The bulletin warns of dangerous surf and localized beach erosion. It says large waves can wash over rocks and jetties and sweep people into cold, turbulent water.

A separate beach-hazards statement remains in effect in the same coastal areas until midnight Friday night, November 6 into November 7. That statement concerns an increased threat of sneaker waves; the Sunday high-surf advisory is a new alert with its own forecast period.

The weather service cautions that a calm-looking ocean can be misleading, with long intervals of small waves before a much larger wave arrives. It advises avoiding rocks, jetties and steep beaches and staying well back from the water. Large waves can also move logs and other heavy objects.

The bulletin urges mariners crossing harbor bars to use extreme caution or remain in port until the threat subsides. It directs them to the Coast Guard for actual harbor and bar closures; the advisory itself does not announce a closure.

The wave heights are forecasts for the identified coast and time period, rather than observations of waves already occurring Sunday.
