The National Weather Service issued heavy freezing spray warnings Sunday for two coastal zones in northwestern Alaska, with the warning period continuing until 5 a.m. Alaska Standard Time Monday, November 9.

The Fairbanks office issued the bulletins at 3:46 a.m. AKST November 8. They cover waters from Cape Krusenstern to Cape Thompson out to 15 nautical miles, and from Motherwood Point to Cape Krusenstern out to 10 nautical miles. The warnings specify a start time of 3 a.m. Sunday.

For Cape Krusenstern–Cape Thompson waters, forecasters expect northeast winds of 35 knots, seas of 6 feet and heavy freezing spray Sunday. Sunday night’s forecast calls for northeast winds of 25 knots, seas of 5 feet and continued heavy freezing spray.

The Motherwood Point–Cape Krusenstern forecast differs. It calls for northeast winds of 25 knots, 4-foot seas and moderate freezing spray Sunday, followed by east winds of 25 knots, 4-foot seas and heavy freezing spray Sunday night.

The warning therefore should not be read as a forecast of identical spray intensity across both zones throughout the day. The notices apply to specified coastal waters, rather than all marine areas around Alaska.

The weather service says the listed wind forecasts describe the predominant expected speed and direction. Its sea forecasts represent the average height of the highest one-third of combined wind waves and swell.

These are forecast marine hazards. The bulletins do not provide reports of vessel icing, injuries or damage.
