Orbis International announced October 30 that it will provide an estimated $32 million in financial and technical contributions from 2027 through 2030 to strengthen eye-care systems and expand access to services.

The New York-based nonprofit said the commitment aims to contribute to improved eye health for more than 18 million people and support professional development for more than 250,000 eye-health workers. Those figures are program goals, rather than a count of people already treated or trained under the new commitment.

The announcement was made in connection with the first Global Summit for Eye Health, hosted by Antigua and Barbuda in technical collaboration with the World Health Organization. Orbis said it endorsed the St. John’s Global Compact for Eye Health.

The plan includes an estimated $15 million contribution through continued free access to Cybersight, its digital learning, mentorship and clinical-support platform, over four years. Orbis also pledged the equivalent of $17 million in financial and technical support for cataract-care capacity, training and surgical quality.

The combined $32 million therefore includes technical contributions and access to services, rather than representing only new cash grants.

Beginning in 2027, Orbis plans to work with Antigua and Barbuda to integrate AI-assisted diabetic-retinopathy screening into routine diabetes care. The partners aim for at least 80% screening coverage among people receiving diabetes care by 2030, with referral, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up pathways.

Orbis said it will directly support government-led systems and institutions in 16 countries while continuing global digital training access. The commitment runs from January 2027 through December 2030.

The announcement sets out intended funding, services and targets. It does not report completed outcomes for the forthcoming program or establish that an AI screening tool can replace clinical diagnosis.
