The National Weather Service issued dense-fog advisories early Sunday, November 8, for mountain areas in southern New Mexico, forecasting visibility below a quarter-mile and potentially hazardous driving conditions.

Both advisories are scheduled to remain in effect until 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time Sunday, or 10 a.m. Central Standard Time.

The Albuquerque office’s advisory covers the South Central Mountains forecast zone. It was issued at 12:48 a.m. MST, with the advisory taking effect immediately.

A separate notice from the El Paso–Santa Teresa office covers the Sacramento Mountains above 7,500 feet and the eastern slopes of those mountains below 7,500 feet. That notice was issued at 12:43 a.m. MST and also took effect immediately.

The two offices identify the same visibility hazard and ending time for their respective forecast zones. Their notices describe the areas covered by the advisories; they do not place all of New Mexico under a statewide fog alert.

Forecasters warn that the low visibility could make driving hazardous. The weather service’s instructions are to slow down, use headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead when driving in fog.

The quarter-mile figure is the visibility threshold stated in the advisories. It should not be read as a measurement already observed on every road within the covered mountain areas.

These November 8 notices concern a new southern New Mexico advisory period. Earlier fog advisories for northern New Mexico and the High Plains had different dates and coverage.
