Update — October 28, 2026, 11:07 a.m. CDT (16:07 UTC)

At least 68 people have died following the collision of two high-speed trains in central Spain, according to updated Associated Press and Reuters reports citing Castilla-La Mancha authorities.

AP reported that 58 people needed hospital treatment and that rescuers continued searching the wreckage. The higher confirmed toll supersedes the initial figure reported earlier on this page; it remains a developing count.

A Renfe service struck an Iryo train that had stopped on the tracks near Urda in Toledo province. The trains were traveling from Madrid toward Seville. Rail service between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia was suspended, AP reported.

Earlier Reporting and Context

This page was first published on October 28 with an initial reported toll of at least 10 deaths. Nearby Urda prepared facilities for affected passengers, and emergency personnel responded to the collision.

The precise sequence and responsibility remain under investigation. This update reports the verified casualty development without treating preliminary explanations of the cause as established findings.
