Stryker reported October 29 that third-quarter sales rose 7.7% from a year earlier to $6.5 billion, while GAAP net earnings fell 12.3% to $753 million.

Reported diluted earnings declined 11.7% to $1.96 per share. Adjusted diluted earnings, which exclude specified costs and other items, increased 10.3% to $3.52.

The company reported an operating margin of 15.9%, compared with an adjusted margin of 26.2%. The adjusted margin increased 0.6 percentage points from a year earlier.

MedSurg and Neurotechnology sales grew 9.2% to approximately $3.7 billion. Orthopaedics sales rose 5.7% to approximately $2.9 billion. Stryker attributed organic growth primarily to increased unit volume.

Chief Executive Kevin Lobo said the results fell short of the company’s expectations despite growth in sales and adjusted earnings.

Stryker now forecasts full-year organic sales growth of 6.5%–7% and adjusted diluted earnings of $14.80–$14.90 per share.

It repurchased $1 billion in stock during the quarter and said its board approved another $3 billion in buyback authorization in October. Authorization does not mean those additional purchases are complete.

The results cover the quarter ended September 30.
