The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood warning Friday evening for the West Clear Creek drainage in Arizona, warning of life-threatening flooding after earlier thunderstorms produced heavy rain.

The Flagstaff office issued the notice at 5:22 p.m. Mountain Standard Time November 6. It remains in effect until 11:15 p.m. MST Friday. The warned area includes portions of Coconino and Yavapai counties, rather than every community in either county.

Radar indicated heavy rainfall in the drainage when the bulletin was issued. The weather service said flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly. The notice identifies a considerable flash-flood threat; it does not report confirmed deaths, injuries or rescues.

Locations named in the warning include Verde Lakes, Hanging Garden, Indian Maiden Falls and West Clear Creek Wilderness. It also covers State Route 260 between mile markers 225 and 229, Clear Creek Group Campgrounds and the Bull Pen Day Use Area.

The affected waterways include West Clear Creek and the Verde River near their confluence. The warning describes the risk of rapidly flooding creeks, normally dry washes, roads and underpasses.

The weather service said some dirt roads could become muddy and impassable, while paved roads and underpasses could also flood. Its public alert advises people to avoid flooded areas and not attempt travel unless escaping flooding or complying with an evacuation order. The bulletin does not itself announce an evacuation order.
