The American Association of Kidney Patients announced October 30 that it has awarded Maine Senator Susan Collins its 2026 National Leadership Award for Science and Medical Innovation.
The patient advocacy organization said the recognition reflects Collins's support for medical research, innovation, patient-centered policy and organ-donation reform.
Collins chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee and also serves on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, according to the announcement. Those positions connect her legislative work with federal research and health-program funding.
AAKP President Edward Hickey III cited the group's longstanding collaboration with Congress and emphasized the importance it places on taxpayer-funded research at the National Institutes of Health and academic institutions.
The announcement records the association's award decision and its stated reasons for the recognition. The group's assessments of Collins's impact are its own judgments, rather than independently measured findings about health outcomes.
