Britain marked Remembrance Sunday on November 8 with a two-minute silence and services honouring those who died in military conflicts, including a national ceremony at the Cenotaph in central London.
King Charles III joined members of the royal family, senior politicians and veterans for the London service. The silence began at 11 a.m. local time, equivalent to 5 a.m. Central Standard Time in the United States. A gun marked its end, followed by the Last Post played by Royal Marines buglers.
The government’s order of service placed wreath laying after the silence and the Last Post. The commemoration remembers the dead of the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts involving British and Commonwealth forces.
Services also took place across Scotland. In Edinburgh, veterans, serving personnel and political leaders gathered at the stone of remembrance outside the city chambers. First Minister John Swinney was among those laying wreaths.
Glasgow’s main service returned to George Square after redevelopment work had prompted a temporary move to Glasgow Cathedral the previous year. A silence at 11 a.m. was followed by wreath laying.
Organisers had planned a London march-past involving approximately 10,000 veterans representing more than 300 military and civilian organisations. Those are advance participation figures, rather than a verified final attendance count.
Sunday’s ceremonies followed Saturday evening’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. The national service and the festival are separate events within the same weekend of commemoration.
