India’s benchmark stock indexes ended slightly lower in a special Diwali trading session Sunday, November 8, after opening higher, pausing a seven-session rally.
The NSE Nifty 50 fell 44 points, or 0.18%, to 24,986.40. The BSE Sensex declined 28.62 points, or 0.04%, to 80,999.40. Both closing reports put the Nifty back below 25,000.
The special equity session ran from 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. India Standard Time, equivalent to 2:50–4 a.m. Central Standard Time in the United States. The Diwali session marks the beginning of Samvat 2083 in the Hindu calendar.
The headline indexes’ small losses did not reflect the direction of most individual stocks. Of 3,550 shares traded on the NSE, 2,716 advanced, 736 declined and 98 were unchanged. Eighty-nine stocks reached fresh 52-week highs, while 28 reached new 52-week lows.
Sun Pharma rose 2.96%, with Tata Steel, ONGC, Tata Motors PV and Adani Ports also among the Nifty’s gainers. SBI Life Insurance, InterGlobe Aviation, Bharti Airtel, Max Healthcare and Infosys were among its decliners.
The preceding seven-session advance had lifted the main indexes by more than 10%. Sunday’s close describes the outcome of the short ceremonial session, rather than a forecast for the next regular trading day.
