Sony reported a 45% increase in second-quarter operating income Thursday, helped by stronger results from its PlayStation and movie businesses.

Operating income reached 622.3 billion yen, or about $3.95 billion at the exchange rate cited in independent reporting, for the three months ended Sept. 30. That compared with 429.0 billion yen a year earlier.

Quarterly sales rose 10% to 3.43 trillion yen. Net income attributable to Sony shareholders increased 44% to 449.6 billion yen, while diluted earnings rose to 76.49 yen per share from 51.71 yen.

Sony said its Game & Network Services segment generated 1.21 trillion yen in sales, up from 1.11 trillion yen a year earlier. Operating income in the segment rose to 220.1 billion yen from 120.4 billion yen.

The company sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles during the quarter, down from 4 million in the same period last year. Digital software and add-on content sales increased, while higher memory-chip prices remain a potential cost pressure for the gaming business.

Sony’s Pictures segment recorded 513.7 billion yen in sales and 92.6 billion yen in operating income, up from 346.0 billion yen and 13.9 billion yen, respectively. The company attributed part of the improvement to the theatrical performance of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

For the full fiscal year ending March 2027, Sony raised its operating-income forecast to 1.87 trillion yen from 1.72 trillion yen. It also lifted its sales forecast by 500 billion yen to 13 trillion yen and increased its forecast for net income attributable to shareholders to 1.33 trillion yen from 1.21 trillion yen.

The revised outlook reflects higher expected results from the games, music and pictures businesses. Forecasts remain subject to game and film performance, exchange rates, component costs and other business conditions.

The results show that Sony’s entertainment operations are contributing a larger share of growth even as hardware unit sales fluctuate. The company’s U.S. sales across its businesses reached about 1.16 trillion yen during the quarter, according to its supplemental financial data.
