President Donald Trump announced November 6 that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, with the change taking effect Monday, November 9.
Miller currently serves as deputy chief of staff. Trump said Wiles would move to his political operation, keeping the departing chief of staff within his broader political team.
The announcement follows Republicans’ loss of control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections. It changes the leadership of White House operations as the administration prepares to work with a Democratic-controlled legislature.
Trump praised both advisers in announcing the transition. He described Miller as a trusted aide and thanked Wiles for her work, rather than announcing that she would leave his political organization altogether.
Wiles separately expressed pride in her White House service and said her commitment to the president would continue even as her role changed.
Miller has been part of Trump’s inner circle since the 2016 presidential campaign, when he joined as a speechwriter. He has remained closely associated with the president’s immigration agenda while holding a wider portfolio as deputy chief of staff.
Wiles was the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. A longtime Florida political strategist, she worked on Trump’s campaigns in that state before helping oversee his successful nationwide 2024 campaign.
She became Trump’s longest-serving White House chief of staff. During his first presidential term, Trump cycled through four people in the role.
Friday’s announcement sets out a personnel transition, with Miller’s new position beginning the following week. Trump’s statement did not announce a separate change to immigration law or another specific government policy as part of the appointment.
