A new exhibition of American coastal and marine art opened Sunday at Delamar West Hartford in Connecticut, drawing entirely from the New Britain Museum of American Art’s collection.

“Drawn to the Sea: Coastal Masterworks from the New Britain Museum of American Art” presents paintings and works on paper focused on the meeting of land, water and sky. The museum said the selection ranges from quiet harbors and busy waterways to large waves and broad horizons.

The exhibition traces the coast’s place in American life as a setting for commerce, travel, leisure and discovery. It also examines how artists interpreted the shoreline during the industrial growth and territorial expansion of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Works from the museum’s Charles J. and Irene Hamm gift of coastal art are among the pieces on view. The museum describes that collection as a significant group of coastal and marine works.

The exhibition is installed at Delamar West Hartford rather than at the museum’s main building in New Britain. It opened Nov. 1 and is scheduled to remain on view through Dec. 27.

The museum’s announcement identifies the exhibition as a presentation of works from its own collection. It does not list a separate admission charge or daily schedule for the Delamar installation on the exhibition page.
