Launch Catch-Up — Awards Announced October 26, 2026

The Department of Energy selected 14 research projects for a combined $15 million to develop particle-accelerator technology, the agency announced October 26.

The projects involve 29 U.S. institutions: 14 universities, eight national laboratories and seven companies. The funding comes through the Office of Science’s Accelerator Stewardship and Accelerator Development programs.

Planned work includes technologies relevant to cancer treatment, automated accelerator systems for security, ultrafast lasers, beam physics and new superconductors. Other efforts aim to strengthen domestic suppliers of superconducting wire, cable and radio-frequency cavities used in accelerator systems.

DOE said it selected the projects through competitive peer review. Awards cover work lasting up to three years and are fully funded in advance.

The announcement concerns research selections and intended applications. It does not establish that the projects have already produced new treatments, manufacturing systems or security equipment. Their results will depend on the work performed over the funded period.
