The National Weather Service issued a storm warning Sunday for part of the Gulf of Alaska, forecasting east winds of 35–50 knots and seas of 15–28 feet Monday, November 9.
The Anchorage office’s 3:09 a.m. Alaska Standard Time bulletin covers offshore waters north of 57 degrees north latitude and west of 144 degrees west longitude. The warning runs from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. AKST Monday. It does not cover the entire Gulf of Alaska.
The forecast describes a marked increase from Sunday’s conditions in that zone. South winds of 10–15 knots and seas of 7 feet are expected Sunday.
Sunday night, east winds are forecast at 10–25 knots before increasing to 30–45 knots after midnight. Seas are expected to build from 8 feet to 9–14 feet after midnight, ahead of the Monday warning period.
Rain is forecast Monday, with isolated thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. Monday night’s outlook calls for southeast winds of 30–45 knots and seas of 17–30 feet. Those nighttime figures come from the broader forecast and extend beyond the warning’s stated Monday afternoon end time.
For Tuesday, the bulletin forecasts south winds of 15–30 knots and seas of 10–18 feet.
The weather service says wind figures describe the predominant expected speed and direction. Sea heights represent an average of the highest one-third of combined wind waves and swell, rather than the height of every individual wave.
The bulletin is a forecast of offshore conditions; it contains no verified report of storm damage or vessel incidents.
