European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said at an October 29 press conference that she was leaving early to gain greater freedom to address issues outside monetary policy, Reuters and The Associated Press reported.
The explanation followed the ECB’s earlier announcement that she would step down on February 7, 2027. Her term otherwise would have ended in October 2027.
Lagarde linked her decision to the limits imposed on central-bank officials’ public comments. She said the ECB’s independence comes with an obligation of neutrality and a focus on its monetary-policy responsibilities, according to Reuters.
She said she wanted to contribute to broader public discussions but could not do so freely in her current position. Neither that explanation nor the departure announcement named a successor.
Reuters reported that Lagarde said the process of identifying her replacement had already started. She also sought to reassure listeners that the institution’s decision-making would continue through the transition.
Background: Lagarde has led the ECB since November 2019 and previously headed the International Monetary Fund. AP reported that her early departure gives European leaders time to select a successor before France’s presidential election next year.
The new development in this report is her public explanation at Thursday’s press conference. The earlier resignation announcement and her career history provide context.
