Michigan State defeated Michigan 15–6 on Saturday, November 7, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, winning the Paul Bunyan Trophy behind five field goals by Liam Boyd and a defense that forced four turnovers.

The Spartans won without scoring a touchdown. Michigan did not reach the end zone until 1 minute, 35 seconds remained, when Savion Hiter scored on a one-yard run.

Michigan State led 6–0 at halftime after Boyd made kicks from 21 and 37 yards. He added a 38-yard field goal in the third quarter, then connected from 24 and 49 yards in the fourth.

The third-quarter kick ended a particularly long possession: Michigan State drove 79 yards over 17 plays and used 10 minutes, 41 seconds. The Spartans finished with a possession advantage of 38:07 to 21:53.

Michigan’s four giveaways included two interceptions and two fumbles. The Wolverines produced 192 total yards and converted just two of 10 third-down attempts. Michigan State gained 298 yards, with 188 passing and 110 rushing.

The Wolverines’ defense kept the game within reach for much of the night. John Henry Daley recorded two sacks and eight tackles, while Troy Bowles finished with a career-high 15 tackles. Michigan recorded three sacks overall.

Michigan’s late touchdown followed a 31-yard reception by JJ Buchanan, the team’s longest play from scrimmage. It ended the shutout bid but did not erase Michigan State’s lead.

The result ended the Spartans’ six-game losing streak and returned the rivalry trophy to Michigan State. Michigan is scheduled to visit Oregon next Saturday, November 14.
