Mozilla Foundation announced the first 20 grantees of Artists Make Technology on October 28 at the Mozilla Festival in Barcelona.
The $11 million initiative, developed with the Doris Duke Foundation, provides performing artists with funding and technical resources to create technologies for their fields, according to Mozilla's announcement.
The inaugural group spans the United States and works in robotics, artificial intelligence, spatial audio, haptics, mixed reality and motion capture.
Projects described in the release include a six-legged robot designed as a choreographic partner for disabled dancers and haptic technology intended to help deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences experience music through touch.
Other work includes open-source theater captions produced through a combination of AI and human editing, alongside software for capturing the microtones used in Arab maqam music.
Mozilla framed the program as a way for artists to participate at the beginning of technology design and determine the uses of the tools they build.
The announcement identifies a funded cohort and proposed projects. It does not establish that every described technology is finished or widely available.
