The Poetry Foundation announced $1.52 million in grants to 52 nonprofit organizations on October 28, supporting poetry groups, presses, magazines and literary arts services.
The Chicago foundation said the recipients span 23 states and U.S. territories. Their work includes publishing emerging writers, offering fellowships and residencies, organizing public encounters with poetry, and expanding access through translation and archives.
Recipients include Woodland Pattern in Wisconsin, awarded $60,000; the Academy of American Poets in New York, $50,000; and Alapoesía in Puerto Rico, $10,000.
The announcement also lists $60,000 each for the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses and Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora. These are grants to organizations rather than individual poetry prizes.
The foundation identified the awards as general operating support. Including its other philanthropic efforts, it put total grantmaking for 2026 at more than $3.4 million.
President and chief executive Michelle T. Boone said the support comes amid rising costs and declining funding from traditional sources.
